It all began with her failed marriage.......
We had everything except for the skills to cope with the challenges that came after the honeymoon stage. No guidelines on how to transition into a healthy mature relationship. Three beautiful children and 13 years later we separated, with sadness, grief, anger, and shame. Where did it all go wrong? Well, it began with my parent's poor marriage and ultimate divorce. For my ex-husband, it began with being sent abroad to boarding school aged 6, before he could tie his shoelaces.
If only someone had given us a road map as young adults, taught us what we hadn’t learned growing up, and continued to be just an appointment away when needed. We could have been prepared for the inevitable relationship pitfalls and given our children more relationship stability to pass on to their children...our grandchildren.
My passion for helping couples was borne from this failed marriage and my quest to understand where and how things went wrong. The answers came through my own counsellng experience. One penny after another dropped. What I discovered made so much sense and it wasn’t rocket science! But I had to learn what makes a good relationship because as much as I loved my parents, their marriage failed after 6 children ..so how was I to know?
Early on in my career as a couples counsellor I particularly wanted to give young couples starting on their journey of commitment focused skills and relationship guidelines to give them a fighting chance to succeed. Especially those, like me, who didn’t learn the skills from their parents or at school.
And more than that: I wanted them to know and feel they always had a safe place to come back to whenever they needed help. This course is usually their first experience in relationship counselling. It’s important to make a warm, insightful connection leaving them with the memorable experience of learning skills and insights that personally helped their unique relationship. Your experience as a couple’s counsellor and knowledge of couples dynamics helps you pick up potential issues as you read through their answers on the strategically structured questionaries before you meet...and more as you get to know them on the course. Does this package include all the training needed?
Yes, the video and written training cover this. I have designed this course especially for those with training in couples work to use and implement. Am I experienced enough to deliver this course?
If you have had training in couples dynamics, then yes you are. If you have some training but not much experience working with couples, this is a good place to start. Follow the guidelines I've given you and use the structure of the questionnaires to keep you on track. Keep the sessions warm and focus on teaching skills in areas that seem most significant to them.
Can I bring my in own style and interventions when delivering this Course?
My guidelines, suggested interventions and links to resources are useful for marriage preps and are there to assist you. Integrate your own style and professional expertise to help raise their awareness and guide your couple where they most need it.
Can I give the toolkit or handouts to my regular counselling clients?
You can give the individual PDF handouts to your regular clients. The one doc toolkit is exclusively for clients who complete this course with you.
Can I suggest this course to a couple counselling client I am already seeing? what should I say?

Is there a format for assessing the completed questionnaire?
I read them through and make notes of anything particular that stands out. I particularly note each of their limitations, anything they find hard to talk to each other about, any unresolved issues for example how did they resolve their first major argument? How comfortable are they doing things apart? Sometimes they will only give you very brief answers, but as you go through more answers on the questionnaires more of their dynamic unfolds. They are generally motivated, eager to learn, and open up as they relax into the session...
Do I have to read out all the client's answers on the questionnaires during the course?
Not necessarily. You can also paraphrase their answers or paraphrase a whole section then invite open discussion on that section. Some of the questions elicit similar answers by design. This is to help them relax into developing their responses as they move through the questionnaire. Some people give very full answers to start with, or your discussion may elicit a full response. This can mean questions further down have already been covered so you can skip by these. Don't worry if you don't cover everything. The handouts and links complete the course and back up the relationship sections included in the questionnaire.
I work with couples as a psychologist, coach, or social worker. Can I deliver this course?
If you have had some training in couples dynamics then you could deliver this course. In fact, this is a great place to start honing your skills. If you want further training to increase your confidence and understanding of couples. I would highly recommend doing the level 1 online training in the Bader Pearson Developmental Model of Couples Therapy. You can do this at your own pace.
What should I do with the questionnaires after the course?
If you are working with an agency then check with them on their policy around keeping client notes. If you have your own practice then you can keep them in a safe place. This is a good time to let your couple know that you will be there for them if ever they need help in the future. Give them the option. I say “I normally keep the marriage prep questionnaires because many couples do come back for ongoing help periodically....it could be years later.” Ask them if they are ok with that? I assure them they never leave my safekeeping and that no information is shared with 3rd parties.
What's the recommended fee to clients? Do you have samples of how others have marketed this?
A typical fee for this service is your hourly rate for couples therapy x 3 for 3 hours. Plus more for your pre-assessment time (approx 45 mins). If I agree to do a Part 1 and Part 2 of the course from the get-go - this is the same in working hours as a couples intensive. I charge more for this. Check what the going rates are in your area.

Could I offer more hours to cover this course and all the handouts?
Yes, you can. But remember, this is primarily a skills psycho-education course designed to explore how the couple is managing each area of their relationship now and offering them tools, skills and guidelines where most needed.
You can offer them a part two marriage/prep course and tailor this to either
more psycho-education, go through the handouts and resource links in more depth to reinforce the skills needed for lasting relationships. There is more guidance plus extra resource links to support you in delivering Part 2 in the training sections.
A mini intensive where you go deeper into issues that need more focus
